This remodeling project in the northern, IL suburbs was an addition in 2003-2004 to the rear of an existing early Lake County home. This home is possibly a 100+ year old home from the original start times of the town, and has had some remodeling and addition work previously done during it's history. We wished to removed the rear addition that housed the family room and create a larger first floor family room and new entry, with new bedroom areas above in the second floor. Because of the existing steep (12:12) roof pitches on the existing house, we opted for a way to make the new roof not an extension of the existing, such that the massing does not get so great. The new roof plateline was dropped two feet to add intrest and lower the roof, two dormers were placed on the east second floor sides, to add light and vent. These dormers along with the master bedroom vaulted ceiling, and the south half circle window created a very interesting mix of play of light on the ceiling light surfaces. This interior is truly a very special place for the owners. |
